Sustainability at Borgo Pignano
Honouring the Past. Protecting the Present. Regenerating the Future

A Promise Rooted in the Tuscan Soil
There is a moment, just before sunrise, when Borgo Pignano breathes in silence. The hills roll out in soft shadows, the scent of wild herbs rises from the earth, and the first birdsong ripples through the stillness. In this tranquil dawn, the essence of Borgo Pignano reveals itself: a place where nature, culture, and human intention coexist in quiet harmony.
For generations, Borgo Pignano has stood as a testament to Tuscany’s enduring beauty. As custodians of this land, our responsibility extends far beyond hospitality. We are committed to preserving, restoring, and regenerating - ensuring that future generations inherit a Tuscany as vibrant as the one we cherish today. Our sustainability journey now extends to our future property in Florence, guided by the same spirit of stewardship.
Stewardship of the Land & Environment
The land is our greatest teacher, reminding us daily that luxury cannot exist without ecological balance. Circularity is the core of our operational philosophy.
Regenerative systems shape the way we cook, build, heat, irrigate, and consume, from farm to table, from guest room to garden.
Water
Water conservation is at the heart of our philosophy. Our rooms are fitted with water-saving infrastructure, and we employ rainwater harvesting and natural irrigation systems to enhance efficiency and reduce wastage. Phytoremediation beds purify greywater for garden reuse, while extensive recycling and composting return nutrients to the soil.
Waste
We are equally committed to reducing waste. Our gardens thrive on nutrients produced by on-site composting, and we continuously enhance our recycling systems to minimise landfill contributions. We prioritise packaging that is biodegradable, recyclable, or reusable across the estate, and continue working toward full implementation.
Energy and Emissions
Energy is a precious resource, used thoughtfully throughout the estate. Sixty percent of our energy comes from renewable sources with efforts to increase this (see Sustainability Manifesto). This includes the use of solar panels and wood from our own land. Woodchip-fired boilers and eco-heating systems further reduce our reliance on non-renewable energy, while energy-efficient appliances and LED lighting are standard across the property. Our goal is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, with transparent reporting on all emissions and a focus on continuous reduction.
Biodiversity
Borgo Pignano is privileged to be located at the crossroads of two natural reserves. We maintain thriving bee colonies, recognising their vital role in pollination and local agriculture, and invite guests to learn about traditional beekeeping. Our estate is home to a rich array of wildlife, and our low-impact outdoor lighting helps protect nocturnal habitats. We prioritise growing heritage and native Tuscan varieties, preserving genetic diversity and offering guests the freshest seasonal produce.
Our goals are clear: a 10% reduction in water consumption by 2030, a 20% reduction in food waste, complete elimination of single-use plastics, carbon neutrality, and a 15% reduction in energy consumption-all by 2030.
Culture, Heritage & Community Wellbeing

The walls of Borgo Pignano whisper centuries of stories-of artisans shaping stone, farmers harvesting olives, and artists capturing the Tuscan light. Preserving culture is not an act of nostalgia, but an investment in community resilience and identity.
Sustainability begins on our doorstep. More than 90% of our food and drink is sourced locally, strengthening community ties and protecting culinary traditions. Our chefs collaborate with nearby farmers, winemakers, and producers to honour the flavours of the region, while our farm-to-table philosophy ensures that seasonal produce from our organic gardens features in every dish.
We are proud to revive ancient grains, cultivating cereals from traditional seeds and producing stone-ground flours for our artisanal breads, pastas, and pastries. This commitment supports agricultural biodiversity and local food heritage.
Cultural preservation lies at the heart of our vision. The estate, with roots dating back to 1139, has been carefully restored using traditional materials and the expertise of local stonemasons. We collaborate with artisans, ceramicists, woodworkers, and food producers to maintain and restore the estate, while artist residencies in partnership with the Royal Drawing School of London foster creativity and cultural exchange.

People & Responsible Hospitality
The people of Borgo Pignano - gardeners, chefs, housekeepers, and managers - form the living spirit of the estate. Responsible hospitality means creating a thriving, safe, and inspiring workplace for all.
Over 80% of our staff are hired locally, and we offer fair wages, career development, and long-term growth opportunities. We invest in regional wellbeing by supporting micro-enterprises and local charities. Every team member receives comprehensive sustainability training, and guests are invited to participate in workshops on organic farming and nature conservation. Volunteering and community service days further strengthen our connection to the region.
Our aim is to ensure that all our staff receive sustainability training, increase our cultural offering at our new property, Borgo Pignano Florence, and to maintain and increase our commitments to the community.
Governance, Accountability & Continuous Improvement

Sustainability at Borgo Pignano is a living promise, guided by transparency, collaboration, and measurable impact. Our approach is rooted in the rhythms of the land and the changing seasons, ensuring that every action respects the environment and local ecology.
Strong governance ensures that sustainability is not merely a philosophy but a disciplined practice. Our owners and management team are actively involved, engaging with staff, local communities, and auditors to align efforts with both the estate’s heritage and the natural world. Annual sustainability reports, regular audits, and Green Globe certification underpin our commitment to continuous improvement.
We are proud members of Relais & Châteaux, embracing their commitments to protect the world’s culinary heritage, biodiversity, and human dignity. Collaboration and innovation are central to our approach, and we participate in shared initiatives that benefit both people and the planet.
Our targets include: achieving carbon neutrality by 2030, maintaining annual Green Globe certification, publishing a full annual sustainability impact report, completing quarterly cross-departmental sustainability reviews, and actively participating in Relais & Châteaux sustainability initiatives each year.
A Future Enriched by Meaningful Travel

Borgo Pignano’s properties are more than destinations, they are vibrant ecosystems where people, landscapes, and culture thrive together. We believe that travel, when approached with intention, deepens understanding, sparks connection, and inspires stewardship.
As the sun sets over our Tuscan hills, we renew our pledge: to honour what we have inherited, to protect what we cherish, and to ensure that every journey leaves the world a little better than we found it.
