With just over 100 inhabitants, Bolgheri exercises a strong pull over wine devotees because this small village in the province of Livorno is the heart of an area known to sommeliers around the world for labels such as Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Masseto and Guado al Tasso.
The 2.5 mile long avenue of ancient cypress trees leading to the village, celebrated by one Italy’s most prominent nineteenth-century poets, Giosuè Carducci, provides a suitably noble introduction to vintages that are often the prize lots at auctions staged by Christies and Sothebys.
