Borgo Pignano, estate in Tuscany - Luminara

The Luminara di San Ranieri, saint patron of the Tuscan city of Pisa and the protector of all travellers, is a candlelight festival, that takes place every year on June the 16th since 1688, when the grand duke of Tuscany, Cosimo de’ Medici, decided to put his body into a precious, marble tomb.

At sunset, thousands of candles previously put onto Pisa’s bridges, doors and windows are lit up with a absolutely breathtaking result: the river Arno mirrors all these lights and the atmosphere is warm and mystical. At 11 p.m. fireworks colour the sky and surprise the hundreds of thousands of people from Pisa and all over the world walking and standing throughout the Lungarni.
